She was born in Kolkata. She was an unwelcomed guest, a product of lust. She had to pay the price. She was abducted and trafficked to Hyderabad. She spent nine years begging on the roadside. Destiny brought her back to Kolkata where she was sold off to a procuress in Sonargachi. She married Raghu and started leading a healthy life. However she attempted a suicide. She was Ketaki. Why was Ketaki abducted and trafficked? Where was her father and mother? Was Ketaki ever able to meet her real parents? Why did she attempt the suicide? Was it all destiny that brought her back to Kolkata or did The Almighty have something else in His holy mind? After all, Joys and Woes are always woven fine!!
JOYS AND WOES ARE WOVEN FINE is not one of those books you read usually; it is unique in every sense; from the plot… to the concept where harsh truths and atrocities of the society are presented openly! It is in deed a daring task done by the author in coming up with such a book where life of a prostitute is given the spotlight.
This soul stirring tale concretes the point that once you fall into this dirty trade it is nearly impossible to unchain the claws owing to our society! There are many characters/parts in the book other than the main lead(‘s) that could strike you real hard like Munni or Sonali (her name in the database of the prostitution hub)… her words – “Somu is my latest lover. He loves me a lot. He had even offered to marry me. But he does not realize that I need to be loved by many. However you need to take real care of yourself in here. This is an illusionary web. Do not get entangled in it.” In spite of all the odds and shades Ketaki is a strong headed character who will earn your respect in some way or the other.
In this current scenario of rising rape cases in India ; where India is tagged as the land of rapists; these kind of books will generate awareness and I would like to recommend this book to all my readers… read this book and know what is really happening under the shades around you. *Special applause* for the writer for his hard work on this.
I would rate this book 4.5/5 and wish that this is made into a film soon so that it reach es more mass with its essential seriousness.
